Jason Newsted, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former bass player for Metallica, came on The Drive yesterday to play some music from his current project, The Chophouse Band. At first, he plays “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” with himself on solo guitar, accompanied by Joe Ledesma on bass and Rob Tucker on the Cajon. Steve then asked how he got started playing music that is so different than what he played in Metallica. He always played that kind of music, ever since he was a kid.
Steve asked him how he joined Metallica and he told the story of his audition and how 8 days later he was playing to a packed Budokan hall in Japan.
After his interview segment, Jason stuck around for The Drive’s Needle Droppings segment, where they play new recorded music brought in by Doug Jayne of The Last Record Store in Santa Rosa. Here is the audio from that segment too:
